Courageous Advocacy
Courageous Advocacy at Billinge St. Aidan's CE Primary School
At St Aidan’s, courageous advocacy is an important expression of our Christian vision, “Let your light shine” (Matthew 5:16). We want pupils to understand that faith, values and learning can inspire positive action. Through Collective Worship, the curriculum, pupil leadership and links with our local and wider communities, children are encouraged to recognise injustice, consider the needs of others and respond with compassion, courage and hope. Pupils are supported to use their voices thoughtfully, challenge unfairness and take meaningful action on issues that matter locally, nationally and globally. In doing so, they learn that courageous advocacy is not simply about raising awareness, but about developing the confidence, wisdom and responsibility to help bring about positive change. We aim for every child to recognise that they have agency, that their choices matter and that they can let their light shine by contributing to a fairer, kinder and more hopeful world.
This is what some of our pupils think...
Year 6 Supporting Aidan’s Pantry – Courageous Advocacy in Action
Let Your Light Shine – Faith in Action
At Billinge St Aidan’s CE Primary School, our Christian vision, “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16), inspires pupils to live out their faith through love, compassion and service to others. We believe that every child can make a positive difference and contribute to a community where everyone is valued, supported and able to flourish.
Our Year 6 pupils are putting this vision into action through their involvement with Aidan’s Pantry, volunteering alongside members of our church and local community. Following in the footsteps of previous Year 6 pupils, they are embracing opportunities to serve others with kindness, responsibility and commitment.
Courageous Advocacy – Justice and Responsibility
Our work with Aidan’s Pantry reflects our commitment to Courageous Advocacy, social justice and serving the common good. Pupils are developing an understanding of the challenges faced by others, recognising inequality and learning that Christian faith calls us to respond with compassion and action.
Through this partnership, our children are becoming responsible, thoughtful advocates who recognise their ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
Spirituality and Christian Values
Volunteering provides meaningful opportunities for spiritual development through our WOW, OW, HOW, NOW, POW and VOW framework. Pupils can recognise the generosity of others (WOW), develop empathy for those experiencing hardship (OW), question injustice (HOW), reflect on their responsibilities (NOW), take positive action (POW) and commit to continued service (VOW).
In doing so, they demonstrate our Christian values of Love, Hope, Friendship and Perseverance, developing spiritually, socially and morally as they learn to serve others.
Living Our Christian Vision
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds.” – Matthew 5:16
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils and grateful to the dedicated Aidan’s Pantry volunteers for providing such valuable opportunities for our children.
This partnership demonstrates how our Christian vision extends beyond the classroom, nurturing a culture of justice, responsibility and courageous advocacy in which pupils learn to become agents of positive change.
At St Aidan’s, we don't just talk about making a difference – we encourage our children to be the difference.

Harvest Festival – Sharing Hope and Making a Difference
Let Your Light Shine – Worship, Gratitude and Courageous Advocacy
At Billinge St Aidan’s CE Primary School, our Christian vision, “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16), inspires us to live out our faith through love, generosity and service to others. Our Harvest Festival was a wonderful example of our school, church and wider community coming together to put this vision into action.
Our Year 6 Shine Squad confidently led a meaningful Harvest Worship at St Aidan’s Church, reflecting on our half-term journey of Hope. Through thoughtful readings, prayers and reflections, they encouraged us to consider the importance of gratitude, kindness and caring for those in need.
Courageous Advocacy – Turning Hope into Action
Our Harvest celebrations went beyond giving thanks. Through generous donations from our families, we supported Aidan’s Pantry, helping to provide essential items for people experiencing hardship within our local community.
Through their Harvest Worship, our Shine Squad encouraged our school community to reflect on the needs of others and consider how Christian hope can inspire meaningful action.
This connection between worship, reflection and practical service demonstrates our commitment to Courageous Advocacy, helping pupils understand their responsibility towards others and recognise that their actions can make a positive difference.
Spirituality and Christian Values
Our Harvest celebrations provided meaningful opportunities for spiritual development through our WOW, OW, HOW, NOW, POW and VOW framework.
Pupils were encouraged to recognise the wonder of God's provision (WOW), develop empathy for those experiencing hardship (OW), explore questions of fairness and inequality (HOW), reflect through prayer (NOW), respond through generosity (POW) and commit to continuing to support others (VOW).
Our Christian values of Hope, Love and Friendship were at the heart of this celebration, strengthening our sense of belonging and responsibility within our school, church and wider community.
Living Our Christian Vision
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds.” – Matthew 5:16
We are incredibly proud of our Shine Squad for leading such a thoughtful act of worship and grateful to our families, St Aidan’s Church and the wider community for their generosity and support.
Our Harvest Festival demonstrated how our theologically rooted Christian vision shapes collective worship, nurtures spiritual development and inspires courageous advocacy. Through pupil leadership, prayer, reflection and practical action, our children are learning that faith is not simply something we talk about, but something we live out in service to others.
Together, we are letting our light shine and bringing hope to others.
Supporting Haydock Hedgehog Helpers – Caring for God's Creation
Let Your Light Shine – Compassion, Conservation and Courageous Advocacy
At Billinge St Aidan’s CE Primary School, our Christian vision, “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16), inspires our children to show love, compassion and responsibility towards others and the world around them. We believe that caring for God's creation is an important expression of our Christian faith and our commitment to Courageous Advocacy.
Our school community proudly raised £150 through our Summer Fundraiser to support Haydock Hedgehog Helpers, a local charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for sick and injured hedgehogs.
Representatives from Year 6 visited the rescue to present a cheque to Kelly, learning first-hand about the dedication and compassion involved in protecting vulnerable wildlife.
Courageous Advocacy – Protecting God's Creation
During their visit, pupils discovered how their fundraising would help provide food, shelter and essential care for hedgehogs in need. They also learned about Aidan, a hedgehog rescued after being discovered wandering around our school grounds during daylight hours.
The children met two rescued hedgehogs, Hansel and Gretel, and learned about Raven, who had been successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild.
These experiences encouraged pupils to recognise the importance of environmental responsibility, animal welfare and supporting organisations working to protect our natural world.
Spirituality and Christian Values
This experience provided meaningful opportunities for spiritual development through our WOW, OW, HOW, NOW, POW and VOW framework.
Pupils were encouraged to appreciate the wonder of God's creation (WOW), recognise the suffering of vulnerable animals (OW), question how humans can better protect wildlife (HOW), reflect on their responsibility as caretakers of creation (NOW), take action through fundraising (POW) and consider their ongoing commitment to protecting the natural world (VOW).
Our Christian values of Love, Hope, Friendship and Perseverance were reflected in the children's compassion, generosity and determination to make a positive difference.
Living Our Christian Vision
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” – Genesis 2:15
We are incredibly proud of our pupils and staff for supporting this worthwhile local cause and grateful to Kelly and the volunteers at Haydock Hedgehog Helpers for their dedication and inspiring work.
This experience demonstrates how our Christian vision inspires courageous advocacy, nurtures spiritual development and encourages pupils to take responsibility for God's creation. Through learning, reflection and practical action, our children are discovering that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.
At St Aidan’s, we believe that caring for creation is one of the many ways we can let our light shine.

At Billinge St Aidan’s CE Primary School, our Christian vision, “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16), inspires us to care for God's creation and recognise our responsibility to protect and nurture the world around us.
Our Grow to Eat Gardening Club, launched in Summer 2026 with support from Tesco Stronger Starts, provides a wonderful opportunity for pupils to develop practical skills while learning about sustainability, healthy living and environmental responsibility.
Through planting and caring for vegetables, our children are discovering where food comes from and the importance of looking after the natural world. The opportunity to prepare, cook and enjoy their own produce helps them appreciate the journey from seed to plate.
Courageous Advocacy – Becoming Responsible Stewards
Our gardening project helps lay the foundations for Courageous Advocacy, encouraging pupils to consider the environmental impact of our choices and how we can protect the world for future generations.
By learning to grow food, reduce waste and use natural resources responsibly, pupils develop an understanding of how small individual actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Caring for God's Creatures – Compassion in Action
Let Your Light Shine – Protecting Wildlife
At Billinge St Aidan’s CE Primary School, our Christian vision, “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16), encourages our pupils to demonstrate love, kindness and responsibility towards all living things.
When our pupils discovered an injured jay on the school field, they responded with genuine concern and compassion. Recognising that the bird needed help, arrangements were made for it to be taken to Bryn and Golborne Veterinary Centre, where it could receive professional assessment and care.
This simple but meaningful experience demonstrated how our school values influence the decisions and actions of our children.
Courageous Advocacy – Taking Responsibility for God's Creation
Courageous Advocacy begins with recognising when something needs our help and having the compassion to respond.
Our pupils demonstrated this by showing concern for vulnerable wildlife and ensuring the injured bird received appropriate care.
Their actions reflect our belief that every living creature has value and that we all share responsibility for protecting God's creation.
Through experiences such as this, children develop the confidence and understanding to become advocates for animal welfare and environmental protection.
Spirituality and Christian Values
This experience provides meaningful opportunities for spiritual development through our WOW, OW, HOW, NOW, POW and VOW framework.
Pupils can recognise the wonder of wildlife (WOW), develop empathy for an injured creature (OW), question our responsibilities towards animals (HOW), reflect on the importance of compassion (NOW), take appropriate action to help (POW) and commit to protecting living things (VOW).
Our Christian values of Love, Hope and Friendship encourage children to extend kindness and care beyond themselves to the natural world.
Living Our Christian Vision
“The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” – Proverbs 12:10
We are incredibly proud of the compassion shown by our pupils and grateful to the veterinary team for providing care for the injured bird.
This experience demonstrates how our Christian vision nurtures a culture of compassion, responsibility and respect for God's creation. Our pupils are learning that faith can be expressed through small but meaningful actions that protect and care for the world around us.
Every creature matters, and every act of kindness helps our light shine.
