Spirituality
Spirituality at Billinge St Aidan's CE Primary School
Spirituality at Billinge St Aidan's - At St Aidan’s, our Christian vision, “Let your light shine” (Matthew 5:16), shapes the way we understand spirituality and the opportunities we create for every child to flourish. Spiritual development is not confined to Religious Education or Collective Worship; it is woven purposefully throughout our Beacon Curriculum. Across every subject, teachers identify authentic opportunities for pupils to experience WOW (wonder and awe), OW (challenge and empathy), HOW (big questions), NOW (reflection and stillness), POW (action and making a difference) and VOW (values and commitment). These shared lenses give pupils a language through which they can notice, question, reflect and respond to their learning.
We also recognise spirituality through the idea of Windows, Mirrors and Doors: windows help pupils look beyond themselves and encounter the beauty, diversity and challenges of the world; mirrors invite them to reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values and experiences; and doors encourage them to consider how their learning might lead to action, change and a positive difference in the lives of others.
Our BEACON teaching principles provide the pedagogy that helps pupils explore these opportunities deeply. Spiritual development becomes progressively richer as children move through school, enabling them to become increasingly thoughtful, reflective and connected to themselves, others, the world around them and questions of meaning and purpose. Spirituality at St Aidan’s is inclusive and invitational: children of all faiths and worldviews are encouraged to wonder, reflect, ask questions, develop their values and recognise how their learning can help them let their own light shine and bring light to others.
